How Remote Locking Works in Lock My Devices
From the moment you press “lock” to the moment the screen goes dark — here is exactly what happens.
- You
- App or website
- Lock server
- Firebase
- Your devices
-
Step 1
You choose a user code
On the User Code screen you type a code of your choice. Use the same code on every device you want to control together. The code is the only key, so make it long and unique.
-
Step 2
Each device registers
When you tap Continue, the app sends the code and a Firebase push token to the Lock My Devices server. The token is the address that lets the server reach that device.
-
Step 3
You send a lock command
From the app (Lock All Devices) or from the website lock page, a request with your code goes to the server over HTTPS.
-
Step 4
Firebase delivers it
The server finds every device registered with that code and sends a data message through Firebase Cloud Messaging.
-
Step 5
Android locks the screen
The app receives the message and calls Android’s device-admin “lock now” function. The device shows its normal lock screen.
Scheduled locks work offline
A scheduled lock is stored on the device itself with an exact alarm. It does not need the internet when it fires, and the app re-creates it after the device restarts.
What Lock My Devices does not do
- It does not unlock devices remotely — you unlock them with their own PIN, pattern or biometrics.
- It does not track location, erase data or take photos. For that, use Google Find My Device together with it.
- It is available for Android only (Android 7.0 and later).
